Security is being increased on New York's underground railway network after a "credible security threat" to the transport system. Homeland Security official Peter King announced the development, saying: "This is a significant threat." He said that the threat originated from overseas, but refused to give more details. Keep 'em on edge, let them prepare themselves for the real event when it comes. No need to present any evidence, mere claims are always enough. rkm -------------------------------------------------------- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4317758.stm Warning of New York subway threat Security is being increased on New York's underground railway network after a "credible security threat" to the transport system. Homeland Security official Peter King announced the development, saying: "This is a significant threat." In response, the authorities say they are deploying additional police and dogs to patrol the network. Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to assure New Yorkers that everything possible was being done to keep them safe. "I want to assure New Yorkers that we have done and will continue to do everything we can to secure this city," Mr Bloomberg said. The mayor said that along with the additional police patrols and increased random bag checks already being implemented, the city's critical response teams were also directing their attention to the transport system. Different in nature Nonetheless Mr Bloomberg did point out that never before had the authorities received such a threat of this detailed nature: "This is the first time we have had a threat with this level of specificity," he said. He said that the threat originated from overseas, but refused to give more details. New York's police commissioner Ray Kelly said that authorities had received warning of a "possible terror attack in the coming days". He added that already the terror plan had been "partially disrupted" by the additional measures being put in place. He said that while security would be increased throughout the transport system the city's threat level would remain at "orange" - the second highest level of alert and the level it has been since the attacks on the city's World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.
