Back-up diesel-powered generators are available to provide electricity to plant safety systems if power from offsite sources is lost. In addition, in the event of a loss of offsite power, plants are designed to safely shut down.

There are sixteen nuclear power plants in Sandy’s path. Given the predicted severity of the storm, we can expect most or all of them will be dependent on diesel backup in order to avoid a Fukushima-like event. Is there any possibility, at one or more of the plants, that flooding might disable the backup generators? Ah, no, nothing like that could ever happen.
