N.Korea put troops on alert ahead of UN vote -daily

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea ordered a wartime mobilisation of its troops and
citizens hours before the U.N. Security Council approved a resolution condemning
Pyongyang for testing missiles, a South Korean daily reported on Wednesday.

It was the first time in 13 years North Korean authorities had issued such an
order, the JoongAng Ilbo cited a senior South Korean intelligence official as
saying.

North Korea ordered its troops back to barracks, rolled out camouflage to
disguise its military and security assets and restricted civilian travel, the
paper reported the source as saying.

South Korean government officials were not immediately available for comment on
the report.

The order was not broadcast on North Korea's state television or radio, the
source said.

The last time North Korea ordered such an alert came in 1993 during a tense
situation over its nuclear weapons programme, the paper said.

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on Saturday for a resolution
demanding North Korea halt its ballistic missile programme and requiring nations
to prevent Pyongyang from acquiring dangerous weapons.

North Korea defied international warnings and launched seven missiles on July 5,
including its long-range Taepodong-2, which some experts said could potentially
hits parts of U.S. territory.
